Therapeutic exercises are specific exercises designed to improve the performance of our musculoskeletal system.
Exercise done in the correct form, level of intensity and duration designed to achieve a specific purpose makes it therapeutic. Just like a medicine, exercise should be done in the right dosage and the appropriate exercise should be used.
Generally exercises are classified as cardio, strengthening, or stretching.
Tissue-specific exercise protocols
Did you know that there are tissue-specific exercise protocols?
For example, if you want to strengthen a muscle, you will strengthen it using high load and low repetition or high intensity and low frequency exercises; conversely, if you want to strengthen a tendon, you will use low to moderate loads and moderate to high repetitions.
If you want to strengthen or work on articular cartilage or spine and discs, you will use very low loads and very high repetitions.
Before we start any exercise program, we complete a thorough evaluation that helps us determine what is the cause of your problem. For example, is it coming from a weak muscle or a tight muscle, or from an arthritic joint whose cartilage has eroded?
Then, we determine how this condition affects your overall functioning and which movements can improve your condition.
With that information, we can devise a Therapeutic exercise program that will target the particular area and the whole body using different exercises designed to stretch or strengthen and to increase endurance and function.
