What is Functional Movement Therapy?
This form of treatment incorporates exercises combined with mobilization, neuromuscular training and motor control training to involve all the systems associated with human movement. Remember everything is connected in the human body and smooth functioning of each of these in coordination with each other results in effortless and smooth movements. Our bodies are designed to move and movement keeps the muscles functioning optimally.
Let’s say you are having trouble reaching up to take something off a high shelf because of pain in your shoulder. If we only looked at the shoulder and treated the shoulder, we may not get the results we need because the shoulder is attached to other parts of the body. We need to look at how the scapula rotates and how the posture is when doing the movement, what is the thoracic spine doing when the arm is going up, and understand the nerves in the region. Only then we can correct the posture and the scapular rotation, and the shoulder movement now suddenly becomes easier.
Our therapists assess the specific mobility limitations within the joints, soft tissues, viscera and neurovascular tissues and correct the problems in these systems. We move with patterns of movement that we develop as we grow. Correcting those that cause problems and facilitating the proper movement control is crucial to achieving outcomes, hence using an integrated approach to treatment makes a significant difference in achieving the desired results.
