What is the Anodyne Therapy System used for?
The Anodyne Therapy System is used for Peripheral neuropathy, which is damage to your peripheral nerves. Peripheral neuropathy often causes weakness, numbness and pain in the hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. Loss of protective sensations in your legs prevents you from sensing when you have stepped on a sharp object like a nail, and this can lead to infections and is a common cause of lower extremity amputations.
One of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes.
People with peripheral neuropathy generally describe the pain as stabbing, burning or tingling. In many cases, symptoms improve, especially if caused by a treatable condition. Medications can reduce the pain of peripheral neuropathy. Monochromatic Infra Red Emission (MIRE) has been shown to improve the microcirculation in the distal nerves and helps significantly with the symptoms of pain burning and tingling. This uses a system call the Anodyne System which, along with light exercises and balance training, helps tremendously.
How is the Anodyne Therapy System use to treat neuropathy?
Our therapists will carefully evaluate your overall sensations, pain, strength and loss of function, and may devise a plan that will include light exercises along with Anodyne Therapy and/or E Stim as well as balance exercises. Exercises increase tissue demand by stimulating the cells to release chemicals that allow vasodilation.
The Anodyne System uses Infra Red light to make the cells secrete the same chemicals and causes vasodilation distally at the peripheral microcirculation level. Exercises also increase your muscle strength and stability thereby reducing the fear of falling and the actual number of falls, as well as help control your blood sugar levels if the neuropathy is due to diabetes. Additionally, regular monitoring with monofilaments give you object proof of your improvement in protective sensations.
