Therapeutic exercises are specific exercises designed to improve the performance of our musculoskeletal system. That is why the term Physical Medicine.

Exercise done in the correct form, intensity and duration designed to achieve a specific purpose makes it therapeutic. Just like a medicine, exercise should be done in the right dosage and the appropriate exercise should be used.

Generally exercises are classified as:

  • Cardio,
  • Strengthening, or
  • Stretching

Tissue specific exercise protocols

Did you know that there are tissue specific exercise protocols?

For example, if you want to strengthen a muscle you will strengthen it using high load and low repetition or high intensity and low frequency exercises, conversely if you want to strengthen a tendon you will use low to moderate loads and moderate to high repetitions.

If you want to strengthen or work on articular cartilage or spine and discs you will use very low loads and very high repetitions eg thousands.

Before we start any exercise program we do a thorough evaluation that helps us determine what is the cause of your problem – Is it coming from a weak muscle or a tight muscle or from an arthritic joint that has its cartilage eroded.

Then we determine how does this condition affect your overall functioning and what movements make it better.

With that information we can device a Therapeutic exercise program that will target the particular area and the whole body using different exercises designed to stretch, or strength and to increase endurance and function.
