The neck and shoulder might be two different body areas, but they are more connected than you think. You can estimate their relation from the fact that if you are feeling pain in your neck, it might be caused by your shoulder, and if you have shoulder pain, it will radiate to your neck in no time. So, let’s understand the connection area between neck and shoulder.
Understanding The Neck and Shoulder Anatomy
Before you look for physical therapy for neck pain and shoulder strain, you need to understand the direct origin of pain and what connects it. That’s why we will explore their anatomy.
Do you know the nerve that originates shoulder pain is located in the neck? Well, now you know. The neck and shoulder are interconnected areas that share bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, connecting tissues, and nerves. This explains how the pain radiates quickly in this area.
The shoulder and neck are the pillars of your upper body, which means the muscles and nerves connect the head and the arms. That’s why disturbance in the muscles of the neck and shoulder can cause headaches, arm pain, shoulder strain, back pain, collarbone pain, and neck pain.
Trapezius Muscle – The Muscle Connecting Shoulder To Neck
Trapezius is the ultimate muscle connecting neck to shoulder. It’s a large muscle covering the shoulder blades and reaching up to the neck and spine. This is the area that shares nerves, ligaments, and tendons that transfer pain in the body part between neck and shoulder.
If you overwork this muscle, you will strain the entire structure of muscles and areas surrounding it, causing pain in shoulder blades, strain in the back of the neck pinched nerve in the upper back, and heavy arms. Athletes, people who work out, dancers, and even people working in typical jobs can get affected by the inflammation and pain in this muscle that radiates throughout the upper body.
Causes of Neck and Shoulder Muscles
The neck shoulder muscles can experience pain for different causes ranging from everyday daily activities to severe health conditions. The tendons in neck and shoulder can cause pain in one area or the other or both at the same time.
You need to differentiate if it is a pinched nerve or a pulled muscle that is causing pain. Let’s take a look at what can cause inflammation in shoulder and neck muscles:
- Abnormalities in the bones and joints
- Weak trapezius muscle
- Trauma or accident
- Poor posture
- Degenerative diseases
- Tumour
- Shoulder joint instability
- Muscle strain or overwork
